My CrAzY Life!

I have about 5 minutes, so let's hope I can get this done. :)

School started for my kids on August 31st (finally!) They are attending the same school that my husband went to. They love it cuz it's right next door to Grandma and Grandpa's house and we've been playing on their playgrounds for years.

School started for me on August 25th. Yep, I know...You are all thinking...She's too OLD to go to school, but alas...ISU still accepts tuition money from 31 year olds. I quit college and put my husband through school back in the day and decided it's about time for me to finish what I started. I've been trying to slip in a few night classes over the years, but I am biting the bullet and going to school almost full-time this semester and full time next semester (after which I will graduate.) My degree will be in Marketing. I took my first Marketing class last Spring and loved it so much I changed my major.

My oldest daughter auditioned for the musical Annie and made it into the Orphan chorus. She is extremely happy because she found out she gets to sing, dance, "act", AND wear costumes! What could be better in an 8 year old's world? Now we just have to get her to the twice a week practices and performances in November.

I am Enrichment leader in my new ward so that's keeping me on my toes as well. We are having a Back to School Social next week and I don't have a committee yet so Imagine me running around like a Chicken with it's head cut off. (I know...sorry about the mental image.)

But overall, I shouldn't complain. I enjoy being busy. It ensures that I stay organized and goal-oriented. I am extremely blessed with great kids and an extremely supportive husband whom I adore!

If you have any suggestions for Enrichment Super Saturdays...Now would be the time to comment! I'd love to hear any and all suggestions. What works? What doesn't? What's a craft project that you've done lately?

Hawai'i July 2009

For Jason and I's 10th Anniversary, we decided to take a trip just the two of us. Okay, let me backup...I decided. We haven't left our kids longer than overnight but for a trip to Palm Springs a few years ago. Anyhoo, I thought it would be the perfect time since our kids are getting older and let's face it, a large tax return helps. Hawai'i seemed to be the perfect "second honeymoon" destination. Ummmm...did I just type "second" honeymoon, cuz we really didn't take a first, but I guess that's neither here nor there.

Our anniversary is July 23 so we wanted to be in Hawai'i for that date. We flew out the 22nd to Honolulu. My mom took my kids the first 4 days, and my mother-in-law took the last 3 days. (THANKS AGAIN, Judymom and Momma C. if you are reading this.) We rented one bedroom apartment through vrbo.com. It was located on the North Shore up in Laie on Oahu.

It was a cute little town (known to the locals as the Mormon town.) The temple is located here as well as the Polynesian Cultural Center.

Don't you love my sunburn? It was splendid. We went to the Lanikai beach on Friday (this pic was taken Sun) and I apparently was not vigilant enough with the sunscreen. We were sad to learn (before we left ID) that the temple would be closed. It is under extensive renovation. They have closed it for the whole year. We did visit the Visitor's Center and saw a BEAUTIFUL photography exhibit. Turns out the Laie, Hawaii temple is 90 years old. I had no idea it was that old. It was beautiful even in it's renovative state.

On our anniversary we got up early like as in 4 am.(Thank you JETLAG, we salute you) We drove about as far north as we could go. We drove to Dillingham Airfield where some Lost props were located. If you are a fan of lost, you will recognize the planes. We also drove past a YMCA camp that Lost uses as the OTHERS camp. So fun!

We rented a convertible. Why not live it up when you get a chance, right? Here's my sexy husband in our car.

This is taken fairly close to where the pilot scenes of Lost were filmed. Oddly, this is one of the few pics we have of the two of us together in Hawai'i.

We went to the Polynesian Cultural center on our anniversary. Here are a few pics. We even got to dance together on stage at the Luau because it was our anniversary. Us and about 30 other people.

One of my favorite things was snorkeling. We snorkeled at Shark's Cove which was up the road 15-20 minutes from where we were staying. We saw beautiful fish, and got to hang out with a school of the fish you see in Finding Nemo. Our kids thought that was cool. No pics of that though, only wonderful memories. I do have a nice pic of me in the snorkel gear though so enjoy that...(sarcasm was inserted into that last comment.)

One of my other favorite things was seeing the HONU (sea turtles). I compare it to seeing bears in Yellowstone. We were driving up the coast headed to Shark's cove when we saw some people standing on the beach taking pictures of the water. We decided to pull over to see what the fuss was about, and lo and behold there were 5 or 6 turtles fairly close to shore. I could've sat there for hours watching them.

We went to Pearl Harbor, of course, and Punchbowl. We went to the Swap Meet for souvenirs. We at Aoki's Shaved Ice. Yum. We peeled or own Sweet n Spicy Shrimp at Romy's Shrimp Shack. We ate at an AWESOME hole-in-the-wall Mexican Restaurant called AZTECA. So delicious! We did spend our last day there in Waikiki, but I was not a fan. Give me the North Shore anyday. Waikiki had too many expensive shops, and too many people.
Jason and I had a glorious time together. We laughed at the Wild Chickens. We lived in our bathing suits. We attended church on Sunday. We went to a movie theater. Which a little sidenote, was cheaper in Hawaii than it is here in Idaho Falls. Sick!!! We enjoyed the Nose flutes in the Tongan performance at the Polynesian Cultural Center. We enjoyed quiet dinners back at our apartment. We were grateful for the GPS. (note to those planning a trip to Oahu. DON'T rent a car unless you bring a GPS!!!) We almost lost our snorkeling gear before we even got to Shark's Cove. We enjoyed Hawaiian fry sauce. We read on the beach. We took morning and evening walks on the beach.

All in all, it was a FANTASTIC week!

Wow!

There is really no other word for the complete lack of bloggin on my part for the last 2 months. I apologize if any of you fainted on seeing that I have updated and added a new post.

The Cannon family has been in our Idaho Falls residence or almost 2 months now. It's been great...a small adjustment, on my part, as we have neighbors so close, but worth it. I have yet to go around and take pictures of every room to post simply because we have been busy getting things setup and comfortable. This pic is us on our front step.

The month of June is pretty much a blur. Here's a random picture of Carter helping Jason mow our "new house" lawn. I say new house because that's what Carter is STILL calling our house. He refers to it as the new house constantly...so cute!

Taylor's birthday is July 4, so that's always fun. We didn't go to the parade this year because we were too busy getting ready for Taylor's bday party and family BBQ.

Our family has a July 4 dilemma every year as we our oldest child is TERRIFIED of fireworks. She runs inside whenever she hears them. We tried to talk her into viewing the infamous Idaho Falls fireworks show from Community park (far enough away that she wouldn't be able to hear the noise) but that was a No Go. So, my gracious mother-in-law offered to stay home with her while we went to the park with the other 2 kids. The 6 year old fell asleep 15 min in and our 2 1/2 year old was very bored with the "pretty lights," so we ended up leaving before they were finished. No worries though. We were together and that's what mattered.

These last pics are at the Tautphaus Park zoo just this last week. My father-in-law is a member of the local Rotary club and they have a family picnic in the zoo every year. It's catered by Chiz's and they give the kids free tickets to ride the rides so it's a BIG HIT!!!! We genuinely look forward to this event all year long.

This picture if of my future tigers! Go IFHS!!!!!

This next week sees Jason and I off to Oahu, Hawaii for a week. I am wicked excited!!! I'll be sure to take lots of pics and get them posted before Halloween rolls around!

We made it!

We are moved. Pause for big sigh of relief! We are so happy to be here, but always sad to leave good friends behind. Thank goodness we didn't move too far.

I promise to post pictures and more about the whole move thing, but right now I'm too tired to think about it. I have to drive the girls to school in Rigby for the next couple of days. I'll be painting and cleaning our old house while they are in school so the work isn't over yet.

Stay tuned...

Evan, Brother #3

I completely spaced my third brother post. Thank goodness my brothers don't read my blog or else I'd have heard about it by now.

Evan...is my youngest brother. He is 8 years younger. When he was born, I was staying at my Grandma Mortimer's. My parents called me and told me I had another little brother. Boy, was I upset. Three brothers was a lot! I just wanted a baby sister. A couple of days later, we were able to go to the hospital. I soon changed my tune. He was the cutest baby. He weighed 11 lbs and had a mess of dark, dark hair. I loved him from the moment I laid eyes on him. From then on, I became somewhat of a second mother. I used to tote him around on my hip (no easy feat, since he was a big kid, and I was only 8.) I think I still feel like Evan's second mom.

I can't imagine what my family would be like without Evan. He loves to get us all riled up, especially my Mom, but he LOVES with his whole self. A few years back, he was being a typical teenager and doing something stupid. This act involved fireworks. He ended up in the hospital with a split-apart right hand. Very SCARY! He pulled through the whole experience like a trooper. He is a better man because of it!

Evan is our family job guy. I say that because he's had a lot of jobs. He has worked for my Dad in construction, worked for a couple of pest control companies, worked for a hotel, worked for a gas company in Vernal, and now for a politician. He is currently attending BSU and getting pretty good grades I might add. He's very intelligent, articulate, and hard-working when he wants to be. :) I love him to death!!!

LOVE STORY (Taylor Swift) meets VIVA LA VIDA (Coldplay) - Piano Cello - by Jon Schmidt

My friend had this on her blog. I had to share! Jon Schmidt is a favorite of Jason and I's. We've seen him in concert a couple of times. He is a blast to watch and he does such fun things with his music. If you haven't heard about him before this. You should check out his website and listen to some more of his music. Uplifting and fun! He also does Pachelbel's Canon meets U2.

Moving!

The Cannons are relocating! Yea!

We are buying a house in Idaho Falls and will be moving @ the end of May. We are supposed to close on the house this week, but the people couldn't be out until May 10. The kids are excited because they all get their own rooms. Maybe that'll cut down on the fighting (I can dream, can't I?) The house has 5 bedrooms and 3 baths which is a big upgrade from our 3 bed/1 bath home now. The yard is much smaller than what we have, but it is fenced with an auto sprinkler system. No more pulling the sprinkler around for me.

We have lived here for over 5 years so the accumulation of...stuff is great. Anyone have tips they wanna share about packing and moving?

Inspiration

Someone forwarded this video to me. I cried. This guy is AWESOME! Make sure you watch the whole thing. Check out the teens faces as they are leaving. Inspiration for those hard days!

Another weekend down...

Ok. So I did finally finish my header for my blog. It took me a while, but TaDAhhh!

Yesterday was a good weather day in Idaho. Weather in Idaho is like a box of chocolates, ya never know what you're gonna get. (Thanks Forrest) We even sat outside in between conference sessions and let the kids ride their bikes and race back and forth.

Now it's Monday morning. My girls are at school. CJ has a little cold, and I'm starting the laundry. There is something comforting about a routine.

I need to prepare FHE for tonight. Anyone have any brilliant ideas?

Under Construction

Put your hard hats on if you are looking at my block cuz it's UNDER CONSTRUCTION!

I am finally attempting to update my layout. It's taking me forever. Apparently my learning curve isn't so curvacious. (Is that a word?) Anyhoo...I finally got most of it figured out and then forgot to put together my header photos before I changed my backgrounds. SORRY for the mess. Bear with me, I'll fix it and it'll all be pretty and matching soon.

General Conference

I am so excited about General Conference. I love to listen to the messages from our General Authorities and especially our prophet. Especially because it means I can listen to a spiritually uplifting talk without too many interruptions. Plus, I don't have to worry about any callings.

An awesome friend of mine put this on her blog and I'd thought I'd share. It brought a smile to my face. I learned something new, and I thought it was a great way to teach your kids about our leaders. ENJOY!

Newest Addition!

No...I'm not pregnant, and I didn't have a baby. My Dad's Miniature Sicilian donkey had her baby on Sunday afternoon. I was talking to my Mom on the phone when they found out. Sidenote to reader: My parents spend the 1st 3 months of the year in Boise because my Dad is a legislator. They aren't home yet and my Dad has been extremely nervous about her having it without him there. Back to the story: They were so excited, you'd think they'd had another grandchild. The Dean Mortimer household now has 3 mini donkeys. Jenny (the mom), Jill (the older sister), and Janet (2 days old.) Isn't she cute? Me and the kids are going out to welcome her into the family on Wednesday.

TAIslim

I'm loving this new product I am trying. I heard about if from a couple of ladies in my ward. One girl said she's tried every diet there is and this stuff really works. I'm only 2 1/2 days in and I feel great. I haven't gotten on the scale, but it's enough for me that it's helped my sugar and caffeine cravings. I am eating less, and drinking a ton more water. I have more energy. I slept great last night too!

If you haven't heard of it, check it out @ http://www.erincannon.taislim.com.

Mondays

Mondays are usually laidback days for me and the little man. Carter loves to help me sort laundry. (Monday is laundry day at the Cannon household) Here he is in the big pile before sorting. Anyone have a bigger pile than that? I'd love to see pics posted on blogs. :)

On a more journally note... Friday night Jason and I went to Qwest's BRAVO night. The theme was Havana nights. It's fun to get out and socialize with other adults. I don't have any pics, sorry.

CJ fell and hit his head on the kitchen floor last night. It didn't bleed, thank heavens, but he cried and whined for quite a while. Poor kid. I felt so helpless. Good thing they have flexible bones (and skulls.) I bought a Lightning McQueen ice pack which apparently helped. I think it's the only time he's let us actually put it on a bump, so that tells you how bad he was hurting.

My parents were home this weekend from Boise. I don't see much of my Dad, but I know he loves me so what more can I ask? My mom is...Great. I can't think of another word. The older I get, the more I realize how much I love and appreciate her. I am also realizing that I'm just like her in so many ways. (mostly good) She shared her love of music with me and I will always be grateful for that. If I were to think of my life like a home, music is the paint on the walls. OK...so that was a weird analogy. Hopefully you get the idea.

End journally part...

Anyone have any suggestions on good old movies? Maybe your faves?

Today's Lesson

I had to take my girls to school this morning because we had to do some quick hairwashing and they missed the bus. This alone was frustrating for my 8 year old cuz she likes routine and loves to ride the bus. DRAMA, and more drama. I was fairly proud of myself and I stayed calm...

Anyhoo....As I dropped them off, I watched my Kindergartener run one way as the 2nd grader ran the other. I had one of those moments where everything seems to be in slow mo and the thoughts in your head get loud. Don't laugh, I know everyone knows what I'm talking about.

The thoughts in my head were something like this...(Warning, proceed with caution: This is an insight to how my mind functions and how I go from thought to thought.)

Kids run everywhere. They are always excited to get places. Why don't I run? Why don't adults run? I don't see people running from their car to get into work every day. I should run. I need to exercise. I need to lose some weight. ...pause...Wouldn't it be funny if I started running everywhere. Running into the grocery store. Running through the produce section...Apples..Bananas...hurry, the broccoli... Kids are great and I can learn so much from them. I am going to have a good day and be excited about the things I have to do and the places I have to go!

I know...SCARY. But the point is, Show some excitement today! Kids are always excited about the little things and we should be too. So run to the mailbox today. Sure there is probably nasty bills in there, but getting mail delivered is neat!

Brother #2

I have been a slacker! I must beg for your forgiveness.

Brother #2....Dustin

I don't even know where to start with this one. When Dustin was little, he was quite a (pause) uh, I can't even think of a good descriptive adjective. Helien maybe. He had a extreme amount of energy and didn't really know how channel it. He created a lot of havoc for my mom. He annoyed my older brother to no end. I tried to tolerate him, but occasionally, even I couldn't stand him. Sidenote: To those reading this...Dustin is aware of this time of his life so I'm not hurting his feelings by stating this. Continuing on... When Dustin turned probably 14, I decided he wasn't so bad after all and we started getting along really well. I started thinking of him as a friend, not just a brother.

After 9/11, Dustin decided he wanted to join the military. He chose the army. He served 2 tours of duty in Iraq which was scary times for our family. We were so proud of him and his choice to serve our country! When he was released from the military, he came back here and started school @ ISU. He bought a house. He is currently running for ISU Idaho Falls Vice President. We took a Marketing night class together last semester which was a blast! WE ARE SMART! :)

I am so proud of my little bro. He is opinionated and stubborn, but he gets things done. Dustin is loyal and caring. He is a natural leader and a clever wit! I am so thankful to have him in my life and in my children's lives. "Uncle Dustin is always fun!"

Brothers

The last few days I've been thinkin I need to post on my brothers.

I have 3 of them....(end post). No just kidding.

I am so crazy about them that I wanted to share them with you. It wouldn't hurt if any of you know some women that they could date, so keep that in the back of your minds. Yes, they are all single! I'd love to have some sisters-in-law, and some more nieces and nephews, so any help is great.

I'm gonna try and blog about one per day.

Brother #1 DALLIN (No, he's not necessarily number 1 because he's my favorite, just born first, so don't get jealous Dustin.)

Dallin is my big brother (big meaning older). He is only a couple of years older than me, but everyone seems to think I am the older one. My Mom used to tell me that Dallin would crawl in my crib when I was a baby. He would have been 2. I guess he needed someone to "hangout" with. I don't have that many specific memories of him when we were little. I've been told and seen the pictures of a mishap I had involving scissors and my hair. Dallin was the one on the other end of those scissors. I do remember filling our RadioFlyer wagon up with the hose, getting in our swimsuits, and playing for hours in the sun. Too bad that didn't last. As we got older, the fighting ensued. He used to drive me CRAZY! When I was 12, I must have had enough. I don't remember what he did to make me mad, but I was furious and slugged him as hard as I could in the stomach. From that time on, he seemed less confrontational and argumentative. I was quite proud of my slugging abilities and thought them to be the reason for my newfound freedom. It's only been the last year or so I found out that my Dad took him aside and told him he needed to leave me alone. Guess I won't be trying my skills out in the ring anytime soon.

Dallin joined the Marines when he turned 18 and graduated High School. I was so proud of him. I didn't realize how much I would miss him. During his military years he traveled to Bali (I think that's where it was), and brought me back a pearl bracelet. It is a treasure of mine because I couldn't remember him ever giving anything to me (except maybe a few bruises.) I still wear it often and my girls know it as "the bracelet Uncle Dallin bought you."

As adults, it has been fun to build a relationship with him again. He has been through some tough times and still remains positive. Dallin has 2 beautiful boys that I get to see every Tuesday. I have been able to see my big brother for the strong, stubborn, caring, teddy bear that he is. Dall, I love ya!

Valentine's Weekend

We went to Salt Lake City over the weekend. As it was the 2 year mark from Lauren's surgery, we took some Valentine's to the hospital and ate in the cafeteria. We talked about memories we had of the hospital and things that were different.

Sunday we wandered around Temple Square and took some pictures (see below.) In the North Visitor's Center, we went through the exhibit called "God's plan for the Family" which was really nice. Lauren enjoyed talking to all the sister missionaries and finding out what country they were from. She found a sister from Hong Kong so she was ecstatic about that one! We also drove down to Draper to visit the Ikea store. Cool stuff. Bolt was playing at a cheap theater so we took the kids to that too.

Good Family togetherness. Oh, the other picture I'm attaching to this post is of the Valentine's day outfits my Mom sent the girls in the mail. So cute and they were way excited to wear them to the school valentine parties!

Feb 13, 2007....

Two years ago today, my oldest daughter was in surgery at Primary Children's in Salt Lake.

But for journaling purposes (and those who have a few extra minutes to read), I'm gonna start before that.

Lauren started acting sort of strange in Dec of 06. She never wanted to go to recess. Her Kindergarten teacher and I were trying to figure out if it was a bully or something social. In mid-January of '07 she started coming home saying she was tired. I couldn't figure it out. She didn't want to do some of the things she usually did like dance to music. Dancing basically stopped completely. Towards the end of January she came down with fevers in the afternoon. She'd be fine in the morning, come home from school with a fever, sleep for a little while, and then seem a little better. I kept getting more and more confused and WORRIED.

Finally, I called an made an appt with the pediatrician not knowing really what he could tell me. I was at a loss. Jan 31, 2007 we saw Dr. Pettit and the Pediatric Center. She weighed in @ 39 lbs. Keep in mind that she was 6 at this point. My 5 year old already weighs more than that. The Doctor listened to my concerns and then began his normal exam. As he listened to her heart, he turned to me with his stethoscope still in his ears and asked me what type of heart disease she had? I must have had a baffled look on my face and I said, "She doesn't." He apologized and listened to her heart again and then sat down. He told me that he heard a heart murmur. I could tell that he was trying to stay calm and not alarm me. Dr. Pettit said we needed to see a pediatric cardiologist and that he'd see when he could make an appointment for her and Primary Children's. He must have pulled some strings because we had an appointment for the next morning.

We were blindsided, but in a weird way grateful that maybe her behavior could be explained. So the whole fam piled into the van and took a trip to SLC. We were trying to make it sound fun to our 6 and 3 year old so we booked a hotel and told them we could ride the tram and build-a-bear. The Pediatric Cardiologist listened to her heart, said he definitely could hear the murmur and ordered an ECHO. During this appt, the tension rose as the guy doing the echo couldn't say much. The Doc came back in after looking at the ECHO remotely and told us she needed heart surgery.

I though Jason was going to pass out. It was shocking. Only thing they knew at this point was that her aortic valve was leaking due to bacteria "buildup" on it. I remember looking at the screen as he explained it. It reminded me of the kitchen door on the Cosby show that swung both ways. Instead of "sticking" closed, it never completely shut and was causing a lot of problems. The doctor told us she needed to be admitted to the hospital immediately so they could get things figured out.

They moved us into a tiny room to wait for further instructions basically. They needed to find her a room and get things organized. I think we were in that room for 3 hours. It was torture. This picture was taken inside the tiny room. I had no idea that she looked so ill.

In the meantime, I had to call my parents (my mom, cuz my dad was in legislative session) and tell her that their 6 year old granddaughter was in line to have heart surgery. CRAZY. Telling my Mom made it real and scary! My mom, who was in Boise, immediately got in her car to be there with us. That was a HUGE blessing! I had a 6 year old in the hospital, a 3 year old who was confused, and a 4 month old who I was still nursing. Thank goodness for Jason's job that allowed him to take his vacation days so we could all stay together.

They had to perform a lot of tests to discover what caused the infection and valve damage. She was seen by a lot of doctors. Infectious Disease and Cardiologists were the main groups of doctors looking at her case. After being in the hospital on antibiotics for several days, they decided it was safe enough to do the openheart surgery. Feb 8 was supposed to be surgery. It got pushed back every day until the 13th. She was the first surgery of the morning so that was good. The hardest thing was taking her down to the anesthiologist and "turning her over" to him. We could only go so far and then we had to watch her go it alone. That was absolutely heart-wrenching! She was in surgery for about 8 hours. When they opened her up to do the valve replacement, they discovered some damage on her mitral valve as well. So what they actually did was replace her aortic valve with her own pulmonary valve. Her pulmonary valve was replaced with a donor valve. Her mitral valve was repaired. Maybe this picture will help.

She was in and out of the PICU, on antibiotics constantly, on heart medication, had a PICC line put in so that they didn't have to stick her every time they needed blood. She was really put through the ringer but through it all she was so strong. I think she broke down and cried only a couple of times. That was when they postponed the surgery cuz each time they scheduled it she had to go without food or drink for a long period of time so it was all for nothing.

Needless to say she started dancing 5 or 6 days after being in the hospital. Her poor heart was so tired that she didn't have the energy to hardly move let alone play at recess or dance at home. She was released Feb 18, 2007. She went home with a backpack and her picc line still in because she had to have 6 more weeks of antibiotics to cure the endocarditis. They still never figured out what caused it. Their best guess was dental work, but who knows. Here's a couple more pictures from the hospital.

I know this post is long. I apologize, but I need to remember. I am so grateful for my daughter's strength. I am grateful for doctors who spend years studying and practicing to save lives! I am grateful for the gospel in my life. I am grateful for my family who took such great care of us through this whole thing. I am grateful for a husband who honors his priesthood. This experience drew us closer as a family. One trial "down", plenty more to come, but if I have my family by my side, and the Lord's comfort and guidance, I can get through anything.

Photos

I finally got some pics of my camera! Check 'em out. First two are of our Chinese New Year celebration. Second two are my nephews and my kids from "Auntie Tuesday." Aren't they so cute?
